Its a matter of regret that our country forget to honour the proper person at proper time. As veteran filmmaker Mr. Tapan Sinha came to their list after a long delay. Hope they should honour "ever young" genious Manna Dey without any delay.

Better late than never!Respected Shri Manna Dey should have been awarded the highest Indian civilian award Bharat Ratna a decade before! It is the best way to honour ourselves by awarding him Bharat Ratna immediately!!

There is no doubt about it , in the field of Indian music , MANNA DEY is the most deserving personality to get the highest honour. It is also notable that possibly he is the only person still performing at the age of ninety ,he himself is an institution and he is the only performing singer who had been dominating Sugam-Sangeet till today since last 6 decades. He is the only versatile singer who can sing from rock to kirtan. We the Indian should be proud of him. At this age, his recent released album "Mahamantra" creats such a devotional atmosphere which adds a little more to his long musical career. We all pray for his good health and more musical years.
He deserves "Bharatratna" and I think 'Bharatratna award" will also be rightly priced being awarded to such a music-mastero.Many thanks to Shyamal Ghosh for raising such a topic.

I am really shocked to know that Manna da has not been awarded Bharat Ratna so far. Why? Every Indian soul should be ashamed of that!

He is definitely the most eligible personality to get the 'Bharat Ratna' award. We Indians are proud of him. Whatever we will say about him, is too less, for him. This versatile singer continues his ‘SADHANA’ till now…

No doubt, is the only person to be honoured with BHARAT RATNA

He is being recognized and acclaimed internationally and he has undone the barriers and boundaries of all the regions of India. Manna Dey is for all the music lovers of this Global music village. He still performs for more than 3 hours at a stretch in any musical program. People from all the layers of the society attend desperately to experience this living legend and his music. He is a phenomenon to Indian music. I request all the music lovers and the Govt of India to raise a united voice to confer him the Bharat Ratna award in no time. I also strongly feel the need to develop a complete Archive on him by the Govt. of India.

From the Himalayas to Kanyakumari and from Punjab to Assam---in almost all the major languages, he is the one who has been the singing throughout his life. He has travelled and mesmerised music lovers all over the world. His patriotic songs in films had been milestones in History.

He has performed on the same stage where Mahatma Gandhi, Nazrul Islam has performed, he has seen Rabindra nath Tagore and performed for 65 years. Is there any one who deserves Bharat Ratna more than him???

The Manna lovers seem to be exactly alike, a monolithic group who are wealthy, pampered and self-indulgent. The common masses of India dont care about Bharat Ratna. For them the pressure of living is too immeddiate and incessant to allow time for luxurious appeals.

"AAMI TOMARI DIKTAI NILAM". Manna Dey's songs always reinforce all the lovers around the globe and make life more meaningfull.I wish and pray for his long life and a great recognition like "Bharat Ratna"

Thanks for the opportunity!

This is in response to the anoymous comment on Manna lovers that they are wealthy pampered etc.First, there have been poverty and suffering althroughout the history of mankind and yet poetry, music and other fine arts flourished and kept the hope of living alive.Even Ravindra Nath Tagore was attcked intermittently.Secondly,if you had the time to turn around the pages and read the comments, you spend some time for these events as well.If you did not think the appeal or lobby is not worth then as gentleman turn off the page---but do not for heaven's sake spill your inner venom out on others. If you were a hardcore socialist like Ramakrishna Paramhans or Vivekananda who really could not sleep due to others suffering and addressed the issue with selfless sacrifice you could have said that.Even these saints after sharing their rice and lentils with the poor(which I doubt you do) would spend the evening on bhajans and kirtans for upliftment and purification of the soul.Lastly, your recomendation or not will not affect the proceedings anyway, so better hibernate. If you want still to improve your way of living and repent on your comments just listen to the songs the master recorded for human suffering starting from 1948.I do not expect you to have the list of songs for this purpose and I am also pretty sure you do not have a clue about the Legend's work in all the major languages of India. So I am happy to discuss directly with you and refer you to some elite gentlemen who kept track of the great singers work.5000 songs overall----would be a lifetime acheivment for you if you can stick to the end of it..But in the meanwhile if you are really helping the poor I am with you and will give you a hand with it because I already have gained the strength to do so through THE MUSIC OF LEGENDARY MANNA DEY.

Who else other than him, may be deserving this award???

This is very justified proposal. Manna Dey is such a versatile & legendary singer for last 5 decade. He rightly deserves this honor.

Goes without saying.A BIG YES.

I would be very happy if he can get the Bharat Ratna award for contributing to such great extent to the Indian music industry. One can only dream of making music like the great Manna Dey. I have had the opportunity to play drums with such a great man. He has inspired me to learn and play quality music.
He truely deserves the best...

I heard the chance of listening Mr.Dey when he came to Liverpool a few months ago, and I must say, he was wonderful. Absolutely excellent! A person who can give such happiness with his voice and singing at such an age, deserves all awards and more-, tho' I'm sure it hardly matters to him, because Maa Saraswati has rendered him with the highest award of all- her blessings!

My mother is 87 years old. She passes many sleepless night with the song of Manna Dey.I saw a boy about 7 to 8 years old at rabindra sadan auditorium kolkata at Manna Dey function who song each line of the great singer with low voice when legend performed on the stage.
I personally think Manna Dey is above all type of Ratna. But on behalf of India Govt. they should honor such a personality.

First of all, i would like to thank you for bringing such an issue into limelight. Not only the Bengalees but also the innumerable Indians within and outside India firmly believe that Manna Dey is the most versatile singer of all time.He has left an indelible mark of spontaneity in different forms of Indian music-be it Indian classical,or ghazals,or folk or film songs. The living legend has successfully sung in about 18 languages and each of his songs has made a mark in the world of music. The most important contribution of Manna Dey lies in the fact that he is the one who has incorporated classicism in the arena of mainstream hindi film songs. He has not only popularised but also enriched Indian music. His effortless rendition of raga-based songs leave us mesmerised. His style can hardly be imitated. He breaks his own style when he sings songs like'Aao twist kare' or 'Meri bhains ko danda'.I doubt whether any other singer has been able to get the 'feel'of the songs as splendidly as Mr. Dey has done. His magic voice keeps us spellbound till today.Manna Dey's songs transcend the barrier of time.I'm a 21-year-old girl and Manna Dey's songs appeal to me exactly the way they did to my parents a generation back.Manna Dey has been conferred upon with innumerable awards-Padma Bhushan, Voice of the millenium, to name a few.The award of Bharat Ratna will definitely complete the circle.

Definitely a big yes. But will the govt. ever get out of its slumber & act. Two persons who deserve to be awarded Bharat Ratna are Manna Dey & Rafi Sahab.

Manna dey,the living legend,is the pride of India. The legend has been enriching Indian music since the last 65 years with his tireless effort. A truly versatile singer in all respects - he reaches the height of perfection in both classical songs and light music. He has wonderfully portrayed the entire image of a complex raga within a few-minute song. His status as a truly national singer becomes evident when the people of Gujarat accept him as the best singer of the world of all time. Bengali music also owes a great deal to the magic singer Manna Dey. Thus I earnestly hope that Manna Dey should be awarded with "Bharat Ratna" which would be a matter of pride on the part of the Indian Government, Indian music and the millions of music lovers across the globe.

Doesn't matter..because MANNA DEY is above all 'Ratna's,'bhusan's,'sri's etc etc..HE IS MANNA DEY..My dream singer, best singer in this world (I believe, doesn't care about others!!) , a wonderful personality and above all, a very very nice gentleman. So, let our beloved 'GOVT' take all the so-called 'Ratna', 'bhusan', 'sri' from him, still he will be in our heart! Because people loves him and I believe this is the biggest honour in this world..One last request to our 'govt', please leave this nice person from any kind of dirty politics, we want him to enjoy his singing and his life. 'LONG LIVE MANNA DEY'

Manna Dey should have got Bharat Ratna Award much before. He has brught Indian Classical Music to the masses by belning emotions into the songs. Similarly, he also has excelled in the Western tunes. There were some composers who used Manna Dey very intelligently and some turned to him when other singers could not have sung the songs. Be it Romantic Melody, Patriotic Songs, Qawalis, Pensive Notes, Fast numbers- Manna dey was a singer of all seasons in his hey days. He is India's first and so far the only Classical Pop Singer. List out 10 of your favourite songs in an unbiased fashion, I am sure that Manna Deys solos and duets will compulsorily feature in the list.
